With regards to Indonesia as a sovereign nation, Bali toursim industry has clear benefits. Firstly, national economic growth that is gauged by gross domestic product (GDP), according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Bali in the first quarter of 2018 contributes 1.61% to GDP. In Bali Gross Regional Domestic Product the highest distribution was from accomodation provider and food-drink which are services for tourism industry. It implies that tourism industry in Bali gives a considerable advantage for Indonesia’s income. Secondly, as one of world tourism destinations, Bali represents Indonesia to global world thus Indonesia is famous for its ‘hidden’ paradise and culture heritage. It directly promotes Indonesia as a beautiful place to be visited.
While there are plenty of benefits brought by tourism industry, I tend to think that this tourism-only-focused in Bali also has a detrimental effect to local society. For instance, people will let their land to be rented by foreign investor in order to establish hotel or resort so that they will depend on the passive income. There will be no more struggle to be more productive to explore Bali potentials other than tourism service whereas foreign entrepreneurs in Bali keep inventing and creating something good to society. Then, being a labor in cruise ship or worker for foreigner is acceptable for local people as long as they could have some dollars recalling minimum wage in Badung district only IDR 2,500,000 while the price of lifestyle around Kuta is cost a fortune. On top of that, there are other serious cases such as Tanjung Benoa reclamation and water supply issues that will not be discussed in this essay. Regarding the reclamation, however, it shows that Kuta and the southern part of Bali island is the most favorable area for tourism development that makes the living cost there much less affordable than the other part in Bali. The central tourism attraction in southern part of Bali gives an inequality wealth distribution in Bali. One of the measurements is the human development index that uses three underlying dimensions; a long and healthy life, knowledge, and decent standard of living. In 2017 Denpasar and Badung embrace the highest status of human development index (83.01 and 80.54 consecutively) whilst Bangli and Karangasem remain in medium status with 68.24 and 65.57 although Bangli and Klungkung had the highest growth. To sum up, Bali with the fame of tourism attraction gives another challenge for Balinese. With the international exposure from the tourism industry Bali should be able to innovate and dig more potential in Bali so that the development in Bali is not only centralised in the southern part of the island. Furthermore, government policy must be able to accommodate the needs of Bali to achieve inclusive growth by expanding other areas in Bali.
